Officially, Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894 as a way to honor the American labor movement and contributions that workers had made to the development and growth of our country. For many, Labor Day is the last hoorah of Summer. It is called the “unofficial end of summer” because it marks the end of the cultural summer season. Many people still take their two week vacation ending with Labor Day’s long weekend. Fall activities start up after Labor Day, like school resuming and fall sports begin. We understand the meaning to be a holiday held in honor of working people, but the timing fits perfectly with bidding adieu to Summer, and embracing that Autumn is on its way.
So, as summer’s last big family BBQ, to us that means lots of seafood and lots of fun – of course! The grilling options are endless….it’s a grillapolooza!
Come on down to Customhouse Wharf and grab what you need… Maine lobster tails, live Maine lobsters, whole fish, salmon fillets, oysters, hard shell clams, salmon burgers, swordfish steaks, tuna steaks – you name it, you can grill it! All of these are awesome options for a Labor Day feast. Also, one of the great things about the grill is that you can throw 3 or 4 different things on the grill and cook them all at once. Who doesn’t like convenience thrown into the mix? No grill? No problem! Baking, pan frying, sautéing, or even curing fish in lemon juice (ceviche) will work just as well.
Whatever you do, whatever you cook, make sure you get outside and enjoy this last hoorah! Fresh air and fresh seafood, the perfect ending to a perfect summah!
