Culinary: Sautéed, steamed, stuffed, roasted, baked and in chowders.

Characteristic: Our farm raised mussels come primarily from two places, Bang’s Island in Casco Bay and PEI (Prince Edward Island), Canada.  Both are rope-grown mussels, which are environmentally friendly and are also beneficial to the local economy.
Rope-grown mussels spend their entire life in the water column, suspended above the bottom of the ocean floor.  This encourages rapid growth, sweet meat minimal shell weight, and no sand.
Our local mussel farmer harvests year-round, and grows his mussels off of rafts that are located on leased sites from the state of Maine.  His mussels have been featured on Martha Stewart’s Living and by Alton Brown’s Good Eats on the Food Network.  They have received high praise in articles by the New York Times, the Boston Globe and other publications.
Mussels are an excellent source of protein, low in fat, and a good source of Omega-3 vitamins, and minerals.  Always be sure the shells of live mussels are tightly closed.  Discard any mussels with open shells.  If you are going to try to hold mussels for a day, the best thing to do is to place them in a bowl with a damp towel over them so they don’t get dried out, and place in your refrigerator.
