Tautog


product Specifics On Quality: Firm white meat, with a mild somewhat sweet flavor.

Primarily Sold As: Whole fish or fillets.

Culinary: Baked, broiled, grilled or in chowder.

Characteristic: Tautog - Tautoga onitis - Found from Nova Scotia to South Carolina, most common from Cape Cod to Delaware.  It is a bottom dweller, and prefers rocky bottoms. Tautog have well defined very rubbery lips.  They also have powerful jaws and very sharp teeth, as they are another fish that loves shellfish, such as crabs, clams, mussels, lobsters and others.  They are a mottled brown to shades of black.  There is really no fishery for them, however, they are very popular with sport fishermen.
