Characteristic: Shad - Alosa sapidissima - Shad are members of the Herring family, and they are found in rivers during the spring from the northern part of Florida to the Gulf of the St. Lawrence.  They migrate extensively and, like a lot of other tourist, they summer in Maine till early fall.  One of the reasons the female shad it the prize catch over the male is that the fillets from a female are wider and flatter.  The females are also the ones with the roe.
